The Jug Tavern-Guardian Of Nodoroc!
There are many reasons to be proud to call Winder home. Winder is one of
the fastest growing cities in north Georgia. Facing unspeakable tragedy,
residents banded together to show unwavering support for their hurting
community. They raised funds to support victims, and to aid their
neighbors. Winder continues to be defined by a heritage of proud citizens
who have persevered throughout the years, thriving while facing prejudice,
economic upheaval, and a rapidly changing culture. Over the years people
from all over the state have moved here to enjoy the safety of a small town,
while being able to commute to the state’s capital. Winder as it is known
today has a long lively history. Once referred to as jug tavern, by European
settlers due to its jug like shape, it later became a railroad town named
Winder.
Long before Winder became the city it is today, it was Creek territory. The
creek referenced an area where mud once spewed as “Nordoroc”, loosely
translated to mean “Gateway To Hell”. The area did not support any
vegetation and continuously spewed a dark bluish mud like sludge. The
Creek spoke of a guardian to the Nordoroc. This guardian was a large
creature. Similar to the size of a horse. It was covered in thick long black
hair. The creature had the head of a bear, glowing red eyes, and a long-
forked tongue. The creature walked on four legs and hunted small animals.
They named the creature the WOG. Tales of the WOG terrified locals, and
visitors alike. The WOGS territory remains barren and secluded until today.
Many secrets are buried beneath layers of sediment. The door to Nordoroc
has never sealed, yet its guardian seems to have vanished.
The WOG has not been sighted in years, yet its memory remains. Some
have speculated that the WOG fell victim to the arrival of modern civilization.
Others believe that the WOG returned to the place of its birth deep within the
depths of the earth. In every story there is a seed of truth, and our hope is
to share those stories, legends, and events that make us who we are today.
We hope you enjoy our imagining of the legendary WOG creature, and that it
sparks a conversation.
